Ken Ham thinks we need to stop wasting our money exploring space, because there is no life up in space and if there were they'd all be a bunch of sinners anyway.

"Space? There's nothing up there for you to worry your pretty little head about."
Here are a few of Ham's arguments from his Answers in Genesis website:

I’m shocked at the countless hundreds of millions of dollars that have been spent over the years in the desperate and fruitless search for extraterrestrial life. Even Bill Nye “the Science Guy,” in our recent debate, happily gloated about tax dollars being spent toward this effort. And now, secular scientists are at it again.

Of course, secularists are desperate to find life in outer space, as they believe that would provide evidence that life can evolve in different locations and given the supposed right conditions! The search for extraterrestrial life is really driven by man’s rebellion against God in a desperate attempt to supposedly prove evolution!

Yes we are exploring space just because  scientists hate God and want to prove evolution is real.

Make perfect sense, except that we have ALREADY proven that evolution is real and space exploration is usually not considered to be connected to research in that field.

But wait, Ham has an argument in support of his hypothesis. (A word I am sure he always uses incorrectly.)

You see, according to the secular, evolutionary worldview there must be other habited worlds out there. As the head of NASA, Charles Borden, puts it, “It’s highly improbable in the limitless vastness of the universe that we humans stand alone.” Secularists cannot allow earth to be special or unique—that’s a biblical idea (Isaiah 45:18). If life evolved here, it simply must have evolved elsewhere they believe.

Well yes that would stand to reason, just like primitive earth explorers wondered if there were not others like themselves spread throughout the planet. And there were!

Is that a problem?

Now the Bible doesn’t say whether there is or is not animal or plant life in outer space. I certainly suspect not. The Earth was created for human life. And the sun and moon were created for signs and our seasons—and to declare the glory of God. And I do believe there can’t be other intelligent beings in outer space because of the meaning of the gospel.

You see, the Bible makes it clear that Adam’s sin affected the whole universe. This means that any aliens would also be affected by Adam’s sin, but because they are not Adam’s descendants, they can’t have salvation. One day, the whole universe will be judged by fire, and there will be a new heavens and earth. God’s Son stepped into history to be Jesus Christ, the “Godman,” to be our relative, and to be the perfect sacrifice for sin—the Savior of mankind.

Ohhh, now I get it.

So to be clear there are NO intelligent life forms to be found outside our planet because God specifically made us in his image, and if there WERE intelligent life forms that would really screw up that whole mythology.

Besides if there were, but of course there's not, then they would be a bunch of damn sinners, and who would want to know about them anyway?

Well I would for one.

You see the problem is not that Ham thinks that we are wasting our time exploring space, the problem is that he is afraid that we are not.

And if indeed we were to successfully make contact with intelligent alien lifeforms who had no understanding of religion or the Christian God, that would seriously undermine the idea that everything was made by a single creator who surely would have wanted to care for ALL of his creations, not just the ones on this planet.

And that would make it obvious that statements like this one are horse shit:

The answers to life’s questions will not be found in imaginary aliens but in the revelation of the Creator through the Bible and His Son, Jesus Christ, who came to die on a Cross to redeem mankind from sin and death that our ancestor, Adam, introduced.

Science, cock blocking religion since the dawn of time.

  1. I am always struck by what a limited, tiny god these people worship. They claim that he is Almighty, but limit what he can do and be to their limited human understanding.

They say that humans are made in god's image, but they do not really believe that, for they have manufactured a god made in man's image.

If there is a God, an actual Almighty God, why couldn't his image be seen in an unlimited universe of beings? Couldn't He/She be all things to all His/Her creation?

A Creation filled with beings that in fact developed and changed to meet their environmental circumstances over eons, for isn't it said that "But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day"? 2 Peter 3:8

Why would God be limited to our puny grasp of time?

I cannot take Ham seriously, because he does not take his own beliefs seriously. Also he's full of shit.

When I was a kid- early 60s- my mom (kind of out of the blue) said a priest told her that if there were other civilizations "out there" and they needed redeeming, well then God would take whatever form they were. Not sure why she felt she had to share that, but it did seem to be a sort of source of wonder for her. I preferred the priest who said God, he or she.

I think you're right, Nefer. People like Ken Hamm are afraid and they shouldn't be. The universe (and beyond it) are wondrous and we should be so excited that humans are learning more and more and exploring it in greater depth each day. Truly religious people are not afraid of the universe or of knowledge; they relish both.

They do not worship God, they worship the bible. That is why it is so important that the bible be inerrant.

It is ironic that the second commandment is not worshipping false idols.

Well, Mr. Ham, 45 years ago yesterday men walked on the moon. On a (gasp) Sunday no less. I was 11 years old and at a church picnic. The games stopped and everyone crowded around a small portable B&W to watch the "giant leap for mankind," even the (gasp) pastor! We were all in awe of such an incredible mark in time that we were witnessing. But what can I say? Lutheran:"Rebel Catholic." I didn't have to cry at church camp either.

"Right, because if you have faith, who needs the knowing of things? All problems already solved 2000 years ago, thanks."

So, I wonder why Ham thinks God bothered to make other planets? Without science, we'd never know about them, Even now, it's barely possible to detect them and clearly (according to Ham) they're meaningless anyway. So why bother making them at all? Would God do something... pointless?

Look in the mirror. We have to be a failed experiment if there is a god. We've done nothing but fuck up his creation.

Anon at 5:44 pm, let's hope that it's not too late and that we're not completely a "failed experiment." If we follow the clues maybe we can stem the tide for a few more centuries. It's worth the try. I have great faith in science; it's part of my religious faith.

There is so much wrong here I don't know where to begin.

    1) I didn't realize we were exploring space to find other life. Didn't we do it partly because we can, partly to explore new regions to see what is there that might be useful, and partly because it prompts us to grow as a species?

Not to mention all the amazing science and lifestyle improvements--can anyone say cell phone? The list is almost endless everything from shoe inserts to baby food to artificial limbs and heart surgery. Here are links.

    http://kearth101.cbslocal.com/2011/07/21/list-stuff-we-use-everyday-that-was-invented-from-the-space-program/

    2) What does proving life in the cosmos got to do with proving evolution on earth?

    3) I don't see how, nor have I ever heard that Jesus death was for the universe.

    4) I have always felt that those who say God's "masterpiece" of creation was the human being, are worshiping a very limited and incapable god. Who would want to brag about humans as their top achievement?

    5) The God I worship is a whole lot more powerful, smart and creative than many fundamental Christians seem to worship.

I could go on, but why bother?

And 2:47, thanks for the reminder. My mother made us stay up late so we wouldn't miss the moon landing. I have a friend whose parents let her sleep through it. I have always been thankful to Mom (and Dad) for what she did. Watching them walk on the moon live has made a huge difference in my life.

My Mom had an entire scrapbook of clippings from the Mercury astronauts through the moon walk...of course we watched! We had an astronaut come to our elementary school, and I do recall asking him if girls could become astronauts. I think he just smiled at me...I don;t remember getting any encouragement at that time (I was born in 1953, so I'm guessing I was about 10.) But my high school grad mom, bless her heart, always encouraged us to read, study, and go to college, which she never got to do. She's still one of the smartest people I know, and is a staunch Democrat...she writes letters weekly to the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Akron Beacon Journal...hard-hitting to the point letters...I am so proud of her, and hope when I'm 83 I'm as sharp as she is!!

I will never forget the moon walk. My mother was helping me hand stitch lace on my wedding dress as we sat glued to the television set.

And I agree with you, Anon at 3:35 pm. While I do not understand much about science, especially astro science, I love to think of the Voyageur now entering interstellar space some forty years after its launch and still sending back information. To me, God wants us to be endlessly curious and to learn, always learn more.

All you need to know about Hamm's 'world view': "The Earth was created for human life." He's a Dominionist through and through. Unfortunately, this easily translates to the belief that humans are blessed by 'God' to do what they please with the planet. Combine this with batshit crazy 'end times theology' and you've got trainwrecks like Hamm making MILLIONS OF $$$.

Just keep it to yourselves, religious people, keep it to yourselves until you can provide some sort of proof that your way trumps science. Until then, sit down and shut up, or just share amongst yourselves without involving the sane-minded segment of society.

I'm looking forward to the next 50 years. Mankind will be seriously depleted due to anthropomorphic global warming; food supplies are dwindling as is clean water. There will be a human die-off not seen since the great Indonesian volcanic event nearly 80,000 years ago. There are too many of us and too many regions with too few resources are overbreeding. The Third World, they will be first to go, it's already happening. Second world countries that depend on First world countries for food will be next. First world countries will also see massive crop failure and water rationing, leading to population reduction. If there is a god he doesn't seem to be too happy with his creation because shit's about to hit the fan for humanity. 100 years from now this world will look wayyyy more different than it does not and there are many species that will weather this change just fine and even biologically prosper, however, humans won't be one of those species. God? I guess humans pissed him off?

As a grandmother, I'm not "looking forward to the next 50 years." I'm worried about them. I worry that my grandchildren will suffer because people in my generation did not pay attention to what was going on around them or were too busy burying their heads in the proverbial sand to act. Climate change is not something that we should sit around chuckling about. Vote for responsible representatives in all levels of government and then pressure them to act. Don't let your school board be dominated by fundamentalists who don't want their children in public school anyway. Don't let your apathy result in idiots representing you in city/county commissions, state legislatures or Congress. Vote.

He's just tooting his horn, thinking he proves Bill Nye wrong in their recent "debate". So where should the millions and millions of dollars we spend on "secular science" (is there any other kind?) according to Ham and or Ham's bible? ..... hmmm let me guess....... could it be "creationism"? A museum of lies and guesses? Churches?

Yeah, get rid of science, deny global warming because it's not mentioned in the Bible. Stop looking for a cure for Cancer, we're all gonna die anyway. If his muddled argument is taken to the absurd, which it easily could, everyone should drink grape cool aid and meet the maker quicker.

This kind of makes me hope that scientists discover aliens in the very near future, just to rub it in Ken Ham's face.

On the other hand, I do remember that when I was a kid, I read a story about aliens that came here and were really nice to us, wining and dining everyone, and consulting their book "To Serve Man". Well, in the end, of course it turned out to be a cook book, and they were just fattening us up like cattle.

So contact with aliens might not really be worth rubbing in Ken Ham's face in the end.
